- ZavaZone — Ninja courses, high ropes, a zip line, trampolines and a parkour course under one roof — the place for a kid who needs to climb something. The catch: the hours are odd. - The St. James — The giant sports complex opens two things to non-members that suit a kid: a gymnastics open gym on Saturdays 4–5 pm (ages 6–17, $20) and public ice skating on Fridays 7:30–8:50 pm ($10). The catch: the indoor water park and the play zone are members-only — no day pass. Go for the open gym, not the slides. - Scramble Indoor Play — Alexandria & Falls Church — Soft-play centers split by age — an infant room, a 1–4 zone, 5–8, and a sport court for 8–12 — with a real café, no reservations, just walk in. Weekday prices are a third of weekend prices. Van Dorn St Metro is a 5-minute walk. Second location at 130 E Fairfax St, Falls Church; Scramble Parkour in Shirlington is for older kids and teens. - ClimbZone — 75 themed climbing walls on auto-belays — a preschooler ticket for ages 2–4 — plus a multi-level soft play for 2–10 and an arcade. Sessions are 90 minutes or two hours. Laurel sits right at the 15-mile edge from downtown — closer for the Northeast and Prince George's side of the city. - Sky Zone — Springfield & Gaithersburg — The trampoline-park standby: freestyle jump, foam pit, ninja course, dodgeball, a climbing tower. Buy ahead online; waivers for every jumper. Springfield is inside the 15-mile edge; Gaithersburg is a little past it. Also Bowie, Columbia, Woodbridge, Manassas. - Sportrock — a real climbing gym for kids — Four gyms (Alexandria is the close one) with a kids’ day-pass rate: $24 for ages 10 and under, $28 adults; shoes and harness $7 each. The gym recommends first-timers and families book Climb With An Instructor (minimum age 5), where staff run the ropes. The catch: to climb on a plain day pass someone in your party has to belay, so a family with no climber books the instructor session instead — the price for that sits in the location’s booking portal. - Pinstripes Georgetown — bowling and bocce with brunch — Bowling and bocce over a bistro on the Georgetown waterfront; lightweight balls, ramps and bumpers on request. - Indoor pools — Rollingcrest-Chillum Splash Pool, Wilson Aquatic Center — Rollingcrest-Chillum (Prince George’s, just over the line) is the indoor water park: water slides, a splash pad, a children’s pool for kids 48 inches and under, lap lanes. Wilson (Tenleytown) is DC’s big one: a leisure pool with zero-depth entry beside the 50-meter pool. The catch: Rollingcrest general swim is only noon–4:45 (Fri to 8:45) and it closes Oct 5–18 for maintenance. Wilson is free for DC residents with a DPR account and photo ID; non-residents buy a swim pass. Wilson’s leisure pool is closed weekdays 9–3 during the school year. - Labyrinth Games & Puzzles — Capitol Hill's board-game store: puzzles, LEGO, DUPLO through heavy strategy games, and game nights and tournaments in the shop. - My Gym Bethesda–Chevy Chase — a free first class — Enrollment gym classes for 6 weeks to 10 years, listed here for one reason: the first class is free (a “free class inquiry” on its site), so you can try it on a Saturday without signing up. The catch: it’s a class program, not a play space — no drop-in open play is posted. Book the free class by phone or the site form. - Hyper Kidz Rockville — A cashless soft-play warehouse open every day until 8: a balloon house and ball pit for the little ones, a three-story pavilion for bigger kids; unlimited play, two adults free per family. - Children's Science Center Lab — A hands-on STEM museum for ages 2–12 inside Fair Oaks Mall — the one science museum on the Virginia side. - The Little Towns Children's Museum (North Bethesda) — The Bethesda Playseum is closed; its successor is The Little Towns in North Bethesda — themed pretend-play rooms for little kids, open play all day, no membership. The catch: $25 a child, reservations for most slots. The Bethesda Playseum at 7000 Wisconsin Ave shows as closed (Yelp, 2026); KidFriendly DC's list still names it.
