• Rock Creek Nature Center & Planetarium — Closed for now: the Nature Center and Planetarium building is shut until further notice for remediation (the park's own alert, still posted Sep 18, 2026). • Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens — Ponds of lotus and water lilies with turtles and herons, a boardwalk out into the marsh, and a Junior Ranger booklet at the visitor center. Lotus peak is July; the winter boardwalk is for birds. Paths are unpaved and can be muddy after rain — a stroller with real wheels does fine, a travel stroller doesn't. Leashed dogs welcome. • National Arboretum — 446 acres to run in: the Capitol columns on a hill, the koi at the Administration Building pond, the bonsai museum, and the one-acre Washington Youth Garden, open to any visitor during Arboretum hours. Drive in: the New York Ave gate closes to cars at 2 pm on weekdays (open to 4:30 on weekends); the R St NE gate (2400 R St NE) is open 8–4:30 every day. Restrooms and vending at the Administration Building. The Youth Garden's family programs are run by Friends of the National Arboretum (202-544-8733) — no standing drop-in schedule is posted. • Theodore Roosevelt Island — A wooded island in the Potomac reached by footbridge: a boardwalk through the swamp, the Roosevelt memorial plaza with its fountains, and a loop short enough for small legs. No bikes on the island. The lot (about 90 spaces) is reachable only from the northbound GW Parkway, just past Memorial Bridge; or walk 10–15 minutes from Rosslyn Metro via the trail under Key Bridge. • Oxon Hill Farm (Oxon Cove Park) — A free working farm run by the Park Service ten minutes from DC: barns, farm animals and a self-guided tour with a printed map or the NPS app; trails beyond the farmyard. Gravel paths — the park itself warns they are hard on strollers. No dogs inside the farm (service animals only). Wagon rides and animal feedings are ranger programs, not daily fixtures — check the park calendar before promising one. Park line 771-208-1536. • Frying Pan Farm Park — A 1930s working farm (Kidwell Farm) you walk through for free: barns, pigs, cows, goats, chickens, spring babies, a 30-minute wagon tour through the fields, and a playground by the General Store. The carousel is gone — wrecked in the January 2026 storm and declared unsafe to repair. Weekend wagon tickets are sold in person only (weekdays online too); rides stop for real rain, thunder or wind — call 703-437-9101 to confirm they're rolling. • Brookside Gardens & Nature Center — Free 50-acre gardens with a Children's Garden, two conservatories and ponds full of koi and turtles — and next door, Brookside Nature Center with box turtles, a heron pond and boardwalk displays. It's also the gateway to Wheaton Regional Park's train and carousel. No pets in the gardens. The Nature Center (1400 Glenallan Ave, 301-962-1480) is under renovation — building hours are weekend-only and some programs are limited. • Montgomery's nature centers — Locust Grove, Meadowside — Two free county nature centers. Locust Grove (Cabin John Park, Bethesda): exhibits, self-guided activities, an observation deck and stair-free trails. Meadowside (Rockville): a Raptor Deck with resident owls, hawks and a vulture, eight miles of trails, a Toddler Time program, and new exhibits after a 2026 renovation. Long Branch (Glencarlyn Park): a children's Discovery Room, a viewing pond of frogs and turtles, storytimes and campfires. Gulf Branch: live animals, a restored log cabin, and a trail down the stream to the Potomac. Potomac Overlook (NOVA Parks): live native animals, raptor enclosures, a cave exhibit and playgrounds. • Hidden Oaks Nature Center — A small free nature center in the woods of Annandale District Park with live animals and a pond — and Nature Playce, a third-acre of unstructured woodland play (mud pies, fort-building, digging) that is open dawn to dusk even when the building isn't. Park in the Annandale Community Park lot (4022 Hummer Rd) and take the paved 75-yard path. 703-941-1065. • Huntley Meadows Park — A half-mile boardwalk straight out into a freshwater marsh: beavers, turtles, frogs and herons at eye level, and an observation tower. The flattest, surest wildlife walk in the region. No dogs, bikes or scooters on the boardwalk. 703-768-2525. • Great Falls — The Potomac's big waterfall from overlooks five to ten minutes' flat walk from the parking lot — on either side of the river. Virginia (Great Falls Park): three overlooks near the visitor center. Maryland (C&O Canal, Great Falls Tavern): an ADA boardwalk across Olmsted Island to the overlook, about 15 minutes each way, stroller-easy. On a nice weekend the Virginia entrance line starts around 10:30–11 am and can run 45–60 minutes — arrive by 10 or go on the Maryland side (Great Falls Tavern, MacArthur Blvd, Potomac). Buy the pass on Recreation.gov before you go; cell service is poor. Leashed dogs OK on the Virginia side. • THEARC Farm & Building Bridges gardens — Building Bridges' urban farm on the THEARC campus in Southeast: kids of any age can work alongside a parent at the weekly volunteer sessions, spring through November — planting, harvesting, feeding the compost. • Mount Vernon — the farm and the grounds — Skip the mansion line if you like: admission also covers the Pioneer Farm with heritage-breed animals, the Hands-on History Center, the wharf and miles of grounds — a full outdoor day for a five-year-old. • National Colonial Farm — A quiet 200-acre farm park on the Potomac directly across from Mount Vernon, run by the Accokeek Foundation: heritage-breed livestock, flat river trails, a picnic grove — and it's free, every day. • Woodend Nature Sanctuary (Nature Forward) — Nature Forward's 40-acre sanctuary in Chevy Chase: a wheelchair-accessible trail through meadow, woods, stream and pond, and a Nature Play Space built for kids of all abilities. The catch: no dogs, and no restrooms mentioned. Self-guided tour signs work with a phone; guided tours by sign-up. • Riverbend Park — Fairfax County's park on the Potomac just upstream of Great Falls: flat river trails and a visitor center that runs Family Fun Fridays (noon–5, $5) — and no entrance fee. • Scott's Run Nature Preserve — A creek that ends in a small waterfall into the Potomac — the classic first real hike for a five-year-old. The catch: the county's own words are 'precipitously steep hills' and 'sheer bluffs' on some routes, no swimming, and two small lots that fill early. No coolers, grills or alcohol. • Green Spring Gardens — Twenty demonstration gardens, a greenhouse and a historic house on a flat 30-acre site inside the Beltway — a stroller loop, not a hike. • Turkey Run Park — Riverside trails and picnic areas off the GW Parkway near the Beltway, with rock-hopping at the water's edge and restrooms at the picnic areas — the emptier cousin of Roosevelt Island. The catch: water fountains are off October through April, and there are no trash cans. I-495 exit 43 onto the parkway.
