• Beauvoir Playground — Natural-wood climbing structures (Richter, the German maker) on the Cathedral Close, built for kids of different ages and abilities — a private school's playground that is public whenever school isn't in: weekends and school holidays dawn to dusk, weekdays after 5. No restrooms outside school hours; no dogs, ever; some Saturday mornings close for private events (the school posts the dates). Park on the Cathedral grounds. Olmsted Woods and the Bishop's Garden are next door. • Palisades Recreation Center — A rebuilt playground with separate equipment for younger and older kids, the Potomac drawn into the rubber surfacing, and a spray feature — plus fields, tennis and a dog park on the same block. The catch: DPR spray parks run Jun 22–Labor Day, 10–6 — outside that the water is off. The building itself is closed Sundays (Mon–Fri 8–9, Sat 9–5); the playground is outside it. • Turtle Park (Friendship) — Friendship Recreation Center's playground — 'Turtle Park' to every parent in Ward 3 — with a splash park in summer, a ballfield and courts, a few blocks from Tenleytown Metro. The big sandbox and the turtle sculptures aren't on DPR's page (it lists 'playground, splash park') — the name is the evidence. Rec-center restrooms are closed weekends. • Swampoodle Park — An 8,200-square-foot corner lot in NoMa with a Wallholla — a vertical, multi-storey climbing structure — beside a fenced dog park. Small, intense, and the only thing like it in the city. Run by DPR; it's a climber, not a toddler playground — best for 5 and up. No age guidance is posted. • Turkey Thicket — A DPR playground with a summer spray park behind the Turkey Thicket rec center in Brookland, plus covered picnic tables, a walking track and an indoor pool — a block from the Brookland Metro. The train theme in the lead wasn't confirmed by DPR's page (it lists 'a playground'). Restrooms are inside the rec center — closed Sundays. 202-576-9238. • Reservoir Park — The new park on the old McMillan sand-filtration site (opened June 2024): a playground, two spray parks, a big lawn, the restored fountain, and an indoor pool in the rec center. • Takoma Playground — A 2013 Play DC rebuild next to the Takoma Community Center: play equipment, a small splash park, a 'skate spot' for scooters and boards, and shade — across the street from the aquatic center, two blocks from Takoma Metro. • Eastern Market Metro Park playground — Capitol Hill's town square, rebuilt in 2020: two fenced playgrounds — one for ages 2–5, one for 5–13 — with shade structures, a lawn and a splash pad, on the north parcel at 9th and South Carolina SE. On top of Eastern Market Metro; Eastern Market itself is a block away for lunch. Age zones and the splash pad are from Hill Rag's opening report (Jul 2020); the BID page confirms the park, not the equipment. • The Parks at Walter Reed playground — The playground on the old Walter Reed campus: a tunnel, sandbox, seesaw, giant slide and climbers, next to the Great Lawn where the campus's summer events happen. • Yards Park & Canal Park fountains — Navy Yard's two water parks, a block apart. Yards Park: the dancing fountains on the upper level are the splash; the Canal Basin and waterfall below are for looking — wading and swimming there are prohibited (the park's own rule; it was never built as a pool). Canal Park: a 42-jet dancing fountain in summer that becomes an ice rink in winter. Canal Park is at 200 M St SE, a block east of Navy Yard–Ballpark Metro. No glass, no alcohol; dogs leashed and out of the water. • Georgetown Waterfront Park fountain — The big arcing fountain at Wisconsin and K on the river — the Park Service's own page says people of all ages splash in it on hot days — with a labyrinth at the west end and the Capital Crescent Trail beyond. • Alethia Tanner Park — NoMa's 2.5-acre park on the Metropolitan Branch Trail: a playground built for toddlers through teens, a big sloping lawn, a boardwalk through a meadow, a dog park and a café. • Anacostia Park — playground and roller rink — The only roller rink in a national park, and it's free — skates included: a covered pavilion open year-round, playgrounds and picnic grounds along the river. • Clemyjontri Park — The accessible playground every parent knows: two acres of ramps, rubber surfacing, wheelchair swings and sensory play where every child can play together, plus a carousel and restrooms with changing tables. 81-space lot with a drop-off zone; overflow at Langley Forks Park. • Chessie's Big Backyard — The Franconia Family Recreation Area (formerly Lee District): Chessie's Big Backyard, a fully accessible playground on padded rubber; Our Special Harbor, a free Chesapeake-themed spray park with a beach area for the smallest; a carousel; a treehouse with a ramp; and a sensory trail. Spray park: kids 10 and under need someone 16+ with them; swim diapers required; it closes at once in an electrical storm. • Lubber Run Park (Arlington) — A 31-acre wooded park in Arlington with separate preschool and school-age playgrounds — a big net climber, sandbox, group swings and hill slides — plus restrooms, a stream, trails and a summer amphitheater. • Jesup Blair Park (Silver Spring) — A 15-acre county park at the DC line: a playground, a soccer field, lit courts, picnic areas, walking paths and an amphitheater. Acorn Urban Park was on the lead list by mistake — Montgomery Parks' page shows a gazebo and benches, no playground. Takoma-Piney Branch (Takoma Park city) is unchecked. • East Potomac Park — Hains Point — The peninsula between the Potomac and the Washington Channel: a playground with restrooms at the tip, picnic tables, planes overhead, the 1931 mini-golf course (the country's oldest still running), and a flat loop road for a first bike ride.
